I am a novice at bonsai, with styling my first tree last summer (2014). This is my first winter and I have been moving my trees into my garage during our really cold snaps here in GA. I was just wondering what was the norm and how more experienced veterans handle the colder times. Moving the trees in and out is a little time consuming and as my bonsai garden expands, this could be very time consuming, not to mention space consuming? Any thoughts?
Thanks

xanos, I hope you made it through the winter without too much trouble. I also use my garage when it is too cold or too cold/windy. It is certainly time consuming. It probably takes me an hour and a half to make the move with my trees, assuming I am taking them all in or out, but it is better than losing trees! I know some people heel their trees in on a side of the house where their trees will not be too exposed to wind in the winter and use mulch around and possibly even over the pot so that the roots are as protected as possible from the freezing cold. That helps, certainly. Also, if you have tropicals, it's thought as best to bring them in when the temps are to be below 50 degrees, but even this is not a set in stone number. 50 is pretty safe for tropicals, though. My suggestion is to attend a meeting of Atlanta Bonsai Society, if you are able. We meet most months during the growing season, at Atlanta Botanical Gardens. The schedule can be found at www.atlantabonsaisociety.com/events-calendarI look forward to meeting you! James

Thanks for the input James. I may try heeling them in next year. One concern with that is monitoring the water requirement, but I will figure something out.
I thought about joining and attending some meetings but I live about an hour away for ABG and have a previous commitment for the third Saturday of each month, which seems to be the meeting day of choice. I was at the spring show last Saturday with my wife ... we had a ball.

I'm glad you made it to the show, xanos. I look forward to meeting you. I'll be the officer with a confused look on my face. Please introduce yourself if you make it to a meeting. It's Spring! Happy days!!!
